人類学者として、私は人々が沿岸環境とのつながりに興味があります。基本的には、沿岸環境との共生が彼らの文化を形作り、逆もまた然りです。これは、私が親族関係から文化遺産、場所への愛着、災害復旧、食べ物から海洋資源(漁業権とか)まで、幅広い活動やトピックに興味を持っていることを意味します。世界持続可能性を追求する中で、地域の文化や社会が見過ごされないようにすることに最も関心があります。 それでは現場の声が聞かれ、地域の文化が保護されることを確認することも含まれます。

“As an anthropologist, I am interested in people’s connections with their coastal environments-- basically, in how living with coastal environments shapes their culture, and vice-versa. This means I am interested in wide variety of activities and topics from kinship to cultural heritage, from place attachment to disaster recovery, and from foods to ocean resources. I am most concerned with ensuring that local cultures and societies are not left out in the quest for sustainability. Included in this, is ensuring that local voices are heard, and local culture is protected.

“I am a marine ecologist, and my research interest centers on identifying both natural and anthropogenic factors affecting changes in the distribution of marine fauna and flora across a range of spatial and temporal scales. I would like to make a significant contribution in developing a unifying multiple-stressors approach for the study of marine socio-ecological system dynamics in order to efficiently understand, predict, and manage marine environments and resources.”

“Cheryl Ames is a leading expert in marine biology with a research focus on jellyfish systematics, genomics and using eDNA (environmental DNA) to understand marine biodiversity. She enjoys fostering cross-cultural education and outreach, and finding creative ways to mentor emerging scientists. A part of her outreach activities include workshops with children, such the recent “Let's investigate the changes in the sea by learning from the wise "octopus" of Shizugawa Bay” held in Minamisanriku, Miyagi
